I have read sooo many button-down posts since joining Substack but your piece literally answers every question I've ever had about this clothing item that I struggle with so much as a petite woman. Elyse, literally just showed me the best trick with the double tape. Also, I just bought the poplin shirt from Gap that everyone here keeps suggesting. Let's see if I like it, and if not I think I'm going to invest in the WNU one. This past spring I found a vintage Emanuel Ungaro white button-down shirt at an estate sale, and literally yesterday found a vintage pair of cufflinks on Etsy — and you just showed me how to style it! I had no idea what to do with this shirt before this. Thank you for this excellent well written piece
I love a good button down but when I wear them untucked, I always feel like it looks creased and rumpled quickly, which is hard in an office. Any tips?
I still love my Sessei button-downs! On certain styles and colors they offer custom embroidery with initials which makes me feel super chic. The Kaia is my favorite silhouette. Prices aren’t insane either.
The post I didn’t know I needed but so appreciative for! I’m obsessed with button ups and normally gravitate towards the boxier, looser fit but have been wanting one that’s more fitted so I can tuck in. This was excellent! My two favorites are AYR’s Deep End and J Crew’s Étienne. Have them both in too many colors. And excited to get WNU indigo or blue. TYSM!

I always take a beat and do a quick inspection. It’s almost like doing the “L” with your fingers to figure out which side is left. Ha
